First probate of will on 07 Sep 1810 in Claybourne Co., Mississippi. Wife at time of death was Ester (?) Before his death he had given property to James as recorded in court records in Original Deeds, Claybourne Co., Mississippi.

208. William SIMS

William Sims was a deputy suveyor in North Carolina and a militiaman. He served in the French and Indian Wars as one of Hogg's Rangers, commanded by Ambrose Powell. He was also a Revolutionary War soldier. In the Auditor's Journal of the Comptroller General's Office at Savannah, Georgia, dated 4 Aug 1782, an entry reads: "The United States due William Sims for hire of a horse for seventy days in the Expedition against East Florida in support of Mad Anthony Wayne in his raid on Florida, 1778. Five pounds and five shillings."

He also served under Colonel James McNeil, who gave a certificate dated 7 Apr 1784 granting William Sims property in Washington Co., Georgia. His name appears in the certified list of Georgia troops of the Revolutionary War. It is said he would later acquire more than 9,000 acres in original land grants in Virginia and Georgia.


240. Robert BARKLEY

BIOGRAPHY: His estate was probated 2 Feb 1788 in Rowan County, North Carolina [Source: Will Book D, page 120 and McCubbins Collection, Salisbury, North Carolina Library] and provided eldest son Samuel with land on Richard's Creek, called Weaver Davis Place; also mentioned sons David and John (both spelled BARTLEY), daughters Margaret, Elizabeth, Catharine, Mary, Rachel; sons Robert, William, and Walter, all under 21; grandsons Robert BARTLEY and Robert TODD. Also mentioned was the mill land, to be divided among four daughters (Elizabeth, Catharine, Mary & Rachel) and grandson Robert TODD who must be sent to school. Executors were Benjamin TODD and Peter TODD; witnesses were Joseph TODD, Thomas TODD, John HENDRICKSON.

BIOGRAPHY: Rowan County (NC) County Record Book Three lists Robert BARKLEY as juror from 25 Jan 1770 through 1771; appointed constable in 1771 "in room of" Moses COX. On 9 Aug 1771, a case: James Willison vs Robert BARKLEY. Evidence given by Alexander Martin. On 27 Sep 1771, Robert BARKLEY was ordered to have letters of administration on estate of John Freeman, deceased. Security was Harmon Butner and Henry Strange. On 3 Nov 1770, it was ordered that a grist mill erected on the north side of the Yadkin River by Robert BARKLEY be recorded as a public mill, and that he may dam the water for that purpose. Recorded on 12 Feb 1791, executors of the will of Robert BARKLEY awarded to Lewis Beard 100 acres and sold 100 acres next to John Davis and Robert Shipton on the east side of the Yadkin River about Bald Mountain for 117 pounds.
